The history of "Znak" monthly began in 1946 when several catholic intelectuals from Krakow decided to publish the magazine on religion, philosophy and social issues. Along with "Tygodnik Powszechny" weekly, "Znak" was one of the few periodicals in Poland representing views of catholic majority in Polish society. Such respected intelectuals as Hanna Malewska, Stanisław Stomma, Jacek Woźniakowski, Bohdan Cywiński and Janusz Gowin have leaded editorial staff as the chief editors of the magazine between 1946 and 2005. Although "Znak" is a catholic magazine, it also publishes articles written by non-Catholic authors. Since 1999 "Znak" magazine is published as an monographic issue with articles focused on one topic, like lustration, women in the Church, Polish philosophy, history of 20th century, neurotism etc. "Znak" is published in Krakow.
